This classical music festival organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV) founded in 1973 to organise international arts festivals, was first held between June 15th and July 15th, 1973 under the name of “Istanbul Festival”.
In the beginning, all of these film, biennial, theatre and jazz festivals were together, but it took the name “International Istanbul Music Festival” when these festivals got their own organizations.
The festival, which in 35 years of time since 1973, has got prestigious conductors like Lorin Maazel, Adam Fischer, Vladimir Valek, José Collado, Gotthold Lessing, Riccardo Muti, William Christie; many important orchestras from BBC Symphony to La Scala Philharmonic, from New York Philharmonic, to Czech Philharmonic and from Bavieara Radio Symphonic to Berlin Philarmonic and Mariinski Theatre Soloist Orchestra and Choir; and many artists like Elizabeth Scwarzkopf, Kirite Kanawa, Kathleen Battle, Cecilia Bartoli, Montserrat Caballé, Itzhak Perlman, Mischa Maisky, Maxim Vengerov, Gidon Kremer, Joshua Bell, Ado Ciccolini, Shlomo Mintz, Idil Biret, Fazıl Say, Hüseyin Sermet, Suna Kan, Ayla Erduran together with the audience, has been a member of the European Festivals Association (EFA) since 1977.
The festival, has also hosted the most important artists and groups of Turkey and of the world in Istanbul, from Bolshoi Ballet to Martha Graham Dance Company, from American Ballet Theatre to Ballets de Monte-Carlo and Netherlands Dance Theatre, from Istanbul Oriental Ensemble of Burhan Öçal to Taj Mahal project of Kudsi Ergüner and sema (the ritual of the whirling derwishes) shows.
