New season in the national ballet and opera company

Update: 30 September 2010

Turkish State Theaters are launching their 2010-2011 season with plans for 45 plays throughout the country.

Turkey’s national ballet and opera company is opening its new season at the beginning of October; for the first time, however, ticket prices will be determined according to the play, the venue and the night of the performance.

DOB head Rengim Gökmen said that after a busy and successful summer period, the DOB had finished preparations for the new season program, which will host 45 plays.

A huge production of "Barbarossa" will be performed by dancers from different ballet directorates, said Gökmen, adding that it would play in both Istanbul and Bursa.

In contrast to past years, the opera and ballet directorates were given the authority to determine prices, Gökmen said, adding that a new guideline was being used and that prices would be fixed based on specific performances.

Situation of Atatürk Culture Center

Istanbul State Opera and Ballet Director Suat Arıkan said that because the Atatürk Culture Center, or AKM, at Taksim Square remained closed, the company would perform at the Süreyya Opera in Kadıköy.

Lamenting the current limbo of the AKM, Arıkan said the building was of huge significance for Istanbul’s cultural and artistic life.

When asked about a planned protest by a group of artists in front of the AKM in October to ask for its reopening as soon as possible, Arıkan said the AKM was a must for Istanbul.

He further said all types of support were important for the center, adding that the opera was also doing its utmost to have the building reopened.
